Prologue

Mother Marditunde had the misfortune of going into labor on the day of darkness. She had wanted babies for her own ever since she could remember, and the Light blessed her with two at once; she was going to have twins.

If it were a normal day, everything would have been perfect, two New Sparks would come into this world raised by a loving mother. But this was far from a normal day on the planet Cosopher, for the Harvester was on her way now that her best chaser had crash landed here.

Normally the Harvester’s chaser would reach an energy-rich planet, confirm the activity of energy-rich societies, then ring the dinner bell.

For some reason, this chaser suffered from an intense explosion of negative energy as he entered Cosopher’s atmosphere, turning him into a lethal meteorite. This explosion of negative energy caused a spiritual blackout, as this particular type of energy blocked the main star’s light from penetrating the planet.

Without the Light having a path to Cosopher, poor mother Marditunde’s twins wouldn’t receive the final parts to their souls and would become stillborn.

As the sky was blanketed, the chaser crashing down, Marditunde performed an unimaginable miracle. She had to reach deep inside her own soul, drawing out every bit of Light at the same moment of giving birth, creating a cocoon of Light around her and her twins, transferring it all to the babies giving them the final Spark they needed to complete their souls, thus killing Martitunde.

The twins were alive. One girl, one boy. Unfortunately, this unconventional way of coming into life came with severe drawbacks. They would have to grow up never knowing their beautiful mother; her sacrifice gave them life, but they weren’t whole as she would’ve wanted. Due to the twins having to receive sacrificial Light to complete their souls, the normal amount of sustaining Light given by the main star was not enough to keep them alive.

On the fly, the nearest town mage was able to fashion a device capable of converting Light into soul energy. This device was a small container placed in the middle of the chest, with an opening for slotting charged crystals. Many times per day, the crystals had to be replaced, the Light replenished so that the twins could live normal lives.

This device worked without fail, and the twins would go on to live full lives.
